Ashbourne 2015/16 kicked off before Christmas, so let’s look back at where the teams stand for round two.
The first game of the Ashbourne Cup was played between Mary Immaculate College Limerick and University College Dublin way back in November. A very tight game seen the newly promoted Limerick side scrape a single point victory on home turf on Tuesday November 24th after earlier in the week being crowned All-Ireland Fresher champions. Being the newest addition to the Ashbourne Championship this win puts MIC in a position to reach an Ashbourne Quarter-final in their first year. Next up in their Championship campaign MIC will play Limerick neighbours, 2015 Ashbourne Finalists and 2015 Division 1 league Champions UL.
On a cold night in Waterford Sports Campus, WIT began their battle to retain the Ashbourne Cup after a comfortable victory 22 point over DCU in November. This victory has clearly set the stakes high once again for the Ashbourne Cup. WIT will now travel west in hope for two out of two games while 2016 Ashbourne Cup hosts NUIG will be fighting for their first win after a loss to UCC in round one.
UCD v UUJ 21/1/2016 in Belfield at 8pm
UCD host UUJ in what is set to be an extremely tight affair as both University’s have lost their first round and will be on the hunt for victory. UCD narrowly missed on a win against MIC in round one while UUJ struggled to keep up with the 2015 Ashbourne finalists UL after a triple score defeat. UCD will be more focused and determined to right the wrongs of their one point loss to MIC. In a winner takes all affair this game might be the decider to who will qualify for a quarter-final position.
DCU are set to entertain UCC in DCU with UCC going into the game extremely hopefully for another win after they scraped a four point victory at home against NUIG before Christmas. DCU were suffered first round defeat at the hands of WIT in WIT but it will be vital for the Dublin side to get a win at home to keep their dreams alive of qualifying for the 2016 CCAO Third Level Camogie Weekend Away.
