The chase for the Purcell Cup begins this week four games taking place.
Group 1: ITC v St.Pats Wednesday Jan 20th, 7:30pm in IT Carlow. Referee Pat Keogh
Earlier this year the Purcell and Fr.Meachair Cup Championships were reformed giving a number of teams the option to step up to the next level. The first game of the week sees two of these newly promoted teams IT Carlow and St.Pat’s go to battle in IT Carlow. These sides are no strangers to each other as they have met six times in the last four years, three of these games being the Fr.Meachair Cup final. In 2015 IT Carlow won back to back titles after a semi-final victory over the Dublin College but it is St.Pat’s who hold the latest bragging rights after a five point victory during the league in November. Always a thriller, IT Carlow and St.Pats will fight tooth and nail to get their first points on the board.
DIT have to wait an extra week to get back to Championship pace as the 2014 and 2015 finalists will be hoping to finally get their hands on the Purcell Cup facing St.Pats in round two.
Group 2: QUB v CIT
In a repeat of what is fixed for the Division two league final, Top of the country QUB and bottom of the Country CIT will met for the first of their two games in the Purcell Cup round one. CIT came out victorious this time last year in the Purcell Cup championship with the sides in separate groups of the league. Given the small groups in the Purcell Cup Championship it’s all to play for in these group games to quailfy for the CCAO Third Level Camogie Weekend Away in Galway this year.
After their Division 1 league defeat, Maynooth University have to wait another week to refocus for their round 1 to take on CIT in CIT’s last group game.
