The UL Senior camogie team had an emphatic win over an up and coming Mary I team to put them firmly at the top of their group in the Ashbourne Cup competition. Wednesday’s win guarantees the UL girls a quarter final place and any points in the next round will secure a spot in the semi-finals and the Ashbourne Cup weekend in Galway on Valentine’s weekend.

Playing into a strong wind in the second half, UL took some time to adjust to the playing conditions. It was Mary I who got the scoreboard moving first with a point after 2 minutes. The UL continued pressure was finding gaps in the Mary I defence and Sarah Fryday got UL on the scoresheet after 7 minutes with a well taken goal. For the next 15 minutes UL continued to pile on the pressure but against the wind the girls were having difficulty finding their range with shots dropping short and balls going wide of the posts. Mary I outscored UL 4 points to 2 with 5 minutes left in the half. It was UL who finished out the half strongest with 3 well worked points to Mary I’s 1, leaving the half time score UL 1-5 Mary I 0-6.

Playing with the wind in the second half, UL knew scores would be easier to come by and goals from Aoife Keane and Aoife McGrath and a point from Sarah Friday within the first 5 minutes sent UL flying into an 8 point lead. Mary I playing into the wind and chasing the game found it difficult to break down the UL defence marshalled by Caoimhe Maher and Laura McMahon. The trusted stick of free taker Patrice Diggan kept the UL scoreboard moving and UL outscored Mary I, 8 points to 1-2 in the last 25 minutes of the half.
